What Growth Really Feels Like.

People love to talk about growth as if it’s a β€œone size fits all” transformation, the kind that comes without hesitation, distraction or mistakes. Everything just suddenly β€œmakes sense.” Here’s the truth, growth rarely feels like this from the inside. It doesn’t feel polished or triumphant. It feels like being caught in the middle of a whirlwind: everything pulled apart, dust everywhere, nothing quite where it belongs, and no clear timeline for when its all going to come together.

We’ve acknowledged it before, growth is messy. It’s confusing. It’s emotional. It’s the internal work that no one else sees but needs to be addressed, the tug-of-war between who you’ve been all along and who you’re becoming. It can feel lonely, as if you’re abandoning yourself or parts of you that felt familiar, but what you’ll gain in the process is a newfound sense of self. This becomes closer than we think as soon as we start to become self-aware. When we begin to want change, we prepare ourselves for the road ahead – it won’t be easy but whatever you set your mind to can be achieved. Remember, as you make your way through the process, these subtle victories can often feel small, you almost miss them. That’s why it’s important to be grateful for each step you take.

Growth is about choosing patience when it feels easier to give up or give in. It’s about listening even if you want to interrupt or forgiving rather than holding onto blame. It’s about pausing before reacting, even if the pause is only a breath. It’s setting boundaries that serve you and letting go of the need to be right. Growth is allowing yourself to rest instead of pushing through exhaustion.

These moments don’t look like much from the outside. No one applauds them. They don’t earn you a certificate or a celebration. But they’re the moments where real change lives. It’s the quiet proof that something inside you is shifting, not all at once, but steadily, honestly, and in ways that last.

There is no big reveal. It’s the accumulation of tiny, consistent choices that slowly reshape who we are. And maybe the most surprising part is that you often don’t realize you’ve grown until you look back and notice you’re handling things differently than you once did.

That’s what growth really feels like: subtle, steady, and deeply human.

What does growth feel like for you?

I agree. Growth is rarely dramatic. It’s usually a gradual process of moving through different emotional states while noticing the patterns that once ran automatically.
The ego often tries to pull back into familiar responses, so I find staying curious, asking better questions and seeking perspective from trusted people, can help move beyond blind spots.
I find real growth often looks and feels like pausing, not reacting.

Beautifully said Kristen! I agree completely and thank you for sharing. It’s important to recognize when the ego attempts to keep you down, so you can choose to keep moving forward in a way that works for you. Staying curious is beautiful, as is learning from others. Sharing growth journey’s can help us recognize the beauty in each individual experience, yet the shared commonality as well.

Really loved this piece. The whirlwind metaphor painted such a clear picture, and I appreciate how you described growth as messy and quiet instead of some big obvious moment. The idea that real change happens through small, consistent choices really stuck with me. Beautifully written

Awesome article. I really needed to reflect on this. For me, growth feels like learning to be kinder to myself while still moving forward β€” not perfect, just consistent.

Love your take on growth. One of the biggest take aways is remembering to give ourselves grace throughout the journey. I conquer with what you said. Thank you Elmira!
